Madam Ingabire Marie Immaculée Passes Away After Illness
Madam Ingabire Marie Immaculée, former Chairperson of Transparency International Rwanda (TI-Rwanda), passed away on Thursday morning, October 9, 2025, at the age of 64 after a prolonged illness.
Born in Burundi in 1961 to a family of refugees, Ingabire often spoke about the hardships of growing up in exile. She described how being denied basic rights as a refugee shaped her lifelong commitment to fighting corruption and injustice, particularly in defense of women’s rights.
She completed her primary and secondary education in Burundi, pursued university studies in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and later studied Political Science and Law in France. In 2001, she returned to Rwanda to dedicate her knowledge and energy to her homeland.
Ingabire was among the 20 founders of Transparency International Rwanda in 2004 and was elected Chairperson in 2015. Throughout her career, she worked in media organizations such as ORINFOR and other newspapers, as well as civil society organizations including Pro Femmes Twese Hamwe and IBUKA, always advocating for human rights and women’s empowerment.
Known for her honesty, courage, and principles, she frequently spoke against injustice and corruption, encouraging young people to seize opportunities and contribute positively to the nation. Her life was guided by three key values: faith, respect, and perseverance.
The news of her passing has deeply saddened the nation, with tributes pouring in from colleagues, friends, and the wider community. TI-Rwanda expressed heartfelt condolences to her family and friends, honoring her remarkable legacy.
“Rest in peace, Mother,” wrote many on social media, celebrating a life dedicated to justice, integrity, and service to others.
