M23 Captures Luvungi as Heavy Clashes Intensify Near Uvira
Intense fighting has erupted in Luvungi, a strategic locality in Uvira territory, where AFC/M23 has reportedly taken control of the town center. Clashes involving FARDC, Burundian troops, FDLR fighters, and Wazalendo militias have resulted in heavy losses, particularly among Burundian forces. As gunfire continues around Luvungi, analysts warn that the capture of this key area could signal a deeper advance toward Uvira, posing a serious threat to regional stability in the Great Lakes.
Heavy fighting has resumed in Luvungi, located in the Rusizi Valley of Uvira territory in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, where the AFC/M23 coalition has reportedly captured the center of the town.
Reliable information obtained by Minembwe Capital News on the morning of Wednesday, December 3, 2025, confirms that the sound of gunfire is echoing around the outskirts of Luvungi as AFC/M23 clashes with Congolese government forces (FARDC) supported by Burundian troops, FDLR fighters, and Wazalendo militias.
Reports from the battlefield indicate that Burundian forces suffered the heaviest losses, with dozens of bodies said to have been found after they engaged in intense combat alongside FARDC units.
The fighting reignited early Wednesday morning, following a brief pause on Tuesday evening.
Luvungi is considered a highly strategic locality due to its position along the route to Uvira city. Its capture by AFC/M23 has sparked concerns that the movement may push further into South Kivu, widening its military operations.
Military analysts and human rights organizations warn that continued fighting near Luvungi—especially if Uvira falls—could significantly destabilize the security of the entire Great Lakes region.
