Rwanda Sends Troops to Jamaica to Support Infrastructure Repairs
The Rwanda Defence Forces (RDF) have deployed a team of military engineers to Jamaica to assist in repairing infrastructure damaged by Hurricane Melissa, which struck the Caribbean island late last year.
This deployment is part of a cooperation agreement between Rwanda and Jamaica, aimed at providing technical support in rebuilding critical infrastructure.
Before departing Rwanda on January 14, 2026, Brigadier General Faustin Tinka, Director of the RDF’s Military Vehicle Division and representative of the Chief of Defence Staff, reminded the soldiers to apply their expertise, professionalism, and skills to complete the mission successfully.
He also encouraged them to ensure that the communities benefiting from their assistance would appreciate their contribution and to uphold the RDF’s core values, including discipline and integrity, which he described as fundamental to the work of the Rwandan military.
Hurricane Melissa hit the Caribbean islands in late October 2025, causing extensive damage in Jamaica. The disaster prompted large-scale relief efforts as the country continues to rebuild.
