U.S. President Donald Trump arrived in South Korea on Wednesday for the final leg of his six-day Asia trip, meeting with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung to strengthen bilateral ties and advance ongoing trade negotiations.

South Korea welcomed Trump with a replica gold crown and presented him with the Grand Order of Mugunghwa, the country’s highest honor, in recognition of his role as a “peacemaker” on the Korean Peninsula.

Trump, visibly pleased, remarked, “I’d like to wear it right now,” becoming the first U.S. president to receive the award. The presentation took place at a museum in Gyeongju, a historic city filled with tombs and palaces from the ancient Silla kingdom.

The ceremonial reception included a red carpet lined with flag bearers in traditional Korean attire, a South Korean military band playing “YMCA,” and a gun salute. U.S. and South Korean warplanes escorted Air Force One on its approach, highlighting the visit’s high diplomatic profile.

During discussions, Presidents Trump and Lee focused on finalizing trade deals, with Lee hoping to secure concessions on U.S. tariffs for South Korean exports. Both leaders also addressed broader cooperation in defense, technology, and regional security. Trump reiterated his willingness to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, following North Korea’s recent missile tests.

Gyeongju, home to roughly 240,000 people, is hosting an estimated 20,000 visitors this week for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, despite lacking an international airport and sufficient high-end hotels, creating logistical challenges.

Trump is expected to meet other world leaders during his stay, including Chinese President Xi Jinping, and leaders from Vietnam, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Thailand, and Singapore.

As Trump flew to South Korea, he hinted at ruling out a third presidential term, saying, “based on what I read, I guess I’m not allowed to run,” following remarks by House Speaker Mike Johnson that there was no clear legal path for a third-term bid.
