India Kills Three Pakistan-Based Militants Linked to Kashmir Pilgrim Attack
The Government of India has announced the killing of three militants believed to be behind the deadly attack on Hindu pilgrims in Kashmir earlier this year. The operation, named “Operation Mahadev”, was carried out on 28 July 2025 in Dachigam National Park, located near Srinagar, through a joint effort by the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and national intelligence agencies.
The three men, reportedly Pakistani nationals, were suspected of participating in the April 2025 ambush in Baisaran Valley, where 26 Hindu pilgrims lost their lives. The victims were part of a larger group visiting the mountainous area when heavily armed insurgents opened fire.
India’s Home Minister, Amit Shah, addressed Parliament saying the militants had been under surveillance by Indian intelligence since May.
“We had credible intelligence confirming their presence in the Dachigam area,” he said. “After thorough verification, security forces executed a precise operation to neutralize the threat.”
The April massacre sparked widespread outrage in India and led to a brief but intense flare-up of tensions with Pakistan. In retaliation, the Indian Air Force launched limited airstrikes across the border, while Pakistan denied any role in the attack and rejected the accusations.
Over the following days, there were reports of cross-border exchanges of fire, which raised concerns of a broader escalation. A ceasefire was eventually reached through indirect diplomatic efforts. At the time, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Washington had played a role in facilitating the truce. However, India firmly denied that the U.S. had been directly involved in any negotiation process, emphasizing that the response was based on India’s own intelligence and national security priorities.
This most recent operation is being portrayed by Indian officials as part of a broader counterterrorism effort aimed at dismantling militant networks operating from across the border in Pakistan.
