Eastern DR Congo: Goma Residents Protest AFC/M23 Withdrawal from Uvira
Residents of Goma and nearby border communities in eastern DR Congo staged protests on Monday, expressing concern over the recent withdrawal of AFC/M23 fighters from Uvira.
The demonstrations reflected local frustration with persistent insecurity in the region and a strong demand for lasting peace. Many citizens voiced unease about the potential return of government troops, Burundian forces, and allied militias to the city following the withdrawal.
AFC/M23 pulled its fighters from Uvira on December 17–18 after a week-long presence, a move reportedly coordinated with U.S. officials to build confidence between the group and the Congolese government amid ongoing peace talks.
The group continues to call for a neutral security arrangement in Uvira, aiming to protect civilians and allow normal daily life without the fear of conflict. U.S. envoy Ambassador Jennifer Locetta has indicated that AFC/M23’s redeployment could be possible if the group moves to areas at least 75 kilometers away from Uvira.
If implemented, the plan would allow AFC/M23 to return to previously held positions outside Uvira, including strategic locations like Kamanyola, while maintaining civilian safety in the city.
