Students from the Rwanda Defence Force military training school located in Gabiro on Thursday visited the Kigali Genocide Memorial in Gisozi, where they paid tribute to victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

During the visit, the military cadets toured different sections of the memorial, which preserves the history and memory of more than one million people killed during the genocide. They were also given detailed explanations about the causes, planning, and execution of the genocide, as well as Rwanda’s journey toward unity, reconciliation, and national rebuilding after the tragedy.

The visit formed part of efforts to educate young members of the military about Rwanda’s history and the importance of protecting national unity and preventing genocide ideology.

Located in Kigali’s Gisozi sector, the memorial serves as a place of remembrance and learning for both Rwandans and international visitors. It contains mass graves where more than 250,000 victims are laid to rest, exhibitions documenting the genocide, and information about other genocides that have occurred around the world.

Over the years, the memorial has become an important symbol of remembrance and resilience, regularly receiving students, government officials, foreign delegations, and members of security institutions seeking to deepen their understanding of Rwanda’s past and the country’s recovery journey.

Rwanda continues to emphasize genocide education and remembrance as part of ongoing efforts to ensure that such atrocities never happen again.
