On Saturday, September 27, 2025, Rwanda and Egypt signed an agreement to abolish visa requirements for holders of service, diplomatic, and official passports.

The agreement is expected to ease official travel for government leaders and diplomats of both countries, strengthening bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors.

It was signed in New York on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA80) by Rwanda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Amb. Olivier Jean Patrick Nduhungirehe, and Egypt’s Foreign Minister, Badr Abdelatty.

The signing builds on the outcomes of President Paul Kagame’s recent working visit to Cairo, where he held bilateral talks with President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. The two Heads of State agreed to deepen ties in areas including investment, water resource management, urban development, and sustainable land use.

President Kagame emphasized the shared opportunities, stating: “Rwanda and Egypt have vast potential to expand cooperation. Africa is rich in natural resources, but to truly benefit, we must transform them into value-added products. What we seek is sustainable progress that delivers prosperity to our people.”

Rwanda and Egypt have enjoyed diplomatic relations for over 55 years, with the first Joint Permanent Commission established in 1989. The new agreement reinforces their long-standing collaboration in trade, investment, health, defense, infrastructure, and education.

Both governments expressed confidence that the strengthened partnership will deliver tangible benefits to citizens while contributing to Africa’s broader goals of integration, development, and lasting security.
