President Paul Kagame on Saturday welcomed guests to the 20th Kwita Izina ceremony, emphasizing Rwanda’s commitment to protecting its national parks and the mountain gorillas that remain among the world’s rarest wildlife.

In his remarks, President Kagame stressed that 10% of tourism revenue is directly shared with communities living near the parks, explaining that it is not just support but an incentive to protect and conserve shared natural heritage.

Residents near Volcanoes National Park said the funds, invested in schools, roads, health centers, and cooperative development projects, strengthen their role in safeguarding biodiversity while also improving local livelihoods.

The 2025 Kwita Izina event brought together celebrities, conservation experts, and international guests, and included the naming of 40 baby gorillas born in 2024 and 2025.

President Kagame underscored that partnerships between government and local communities are key to both environmental protection and sustainable development.

Since 2008, the population of gorillas in Volcanoes National Park has grown from 880 to 1,063 today, demonstrating the positive impact of community-inclusive conservation programs.
