At least five people were killed and more than a dozen others injured on Monday after two Palestinian gunmen opened fire at a crowded bus stop in northern Jerusalem, according to Israeli police and paramedics.

The attack happened around 10 a.m. at Ramot Junction, on the city’s northern outskirts. Israel’s Magen David Adom ambulance service said the dead included three men in their 30s, one man in his 50s and one woman in her 50s. At least 11 others were wounded, seven of them in serious condition, while three more sustained injuries from shattered glass.

Police said two assailants emerged from a car and fired a makeshift submachine gun known as a “Carlo” toward civilians waiting for buses. A security officer and an armed civilian quickly returned fire, killing both attackers on the spot. Weapons and a knife were later recovered at the scene.

Although no armed group immediately claimed responsibility, Hamas praised the shooting as a “heroic and exceptional operation,” urging Palestinians in the West Bank to step up confrontation. The attackers were reportedly from villages near the city of Ramallah.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened an emergency security meeting in the aftermath, while Israeli forces sealed off the area and launched operations around Ramallah. The attack adds to escalating tensions in the region, where violence has surged in recent months.
