Pope Leo XIV left Rome this morning at 9:06am for Algeria, marking the first stop of his four-country Apostolic Journey across Africa.

The 10-day visit will take him through four nations Algeria, Cameroon, Angola, and Equatorial Guinea covering a distance of about 18,000 kilometers across 18 flights and reaching 11 cities.

According to Michael Czerny, a senior Vatican official, the purpose of the visit is to encourage the world to “rethink Africa,” highlighting the continent’s growing importance both socially and spiritually.

Africa is home to nearly 20% of the global Catholic population, making it a key region for the Church’s mission. This trip marks the 24th papal visit to the continent by a sitting pope, underscoring its continued significance.

The visit follows Pope Leo XIV’s recent international trips, including visits to Turkey and Lebanon in late 2025, as well as Monaco in France earlier this year.

The African tour is expected to focus on faith, development, and strengthening ties between the Vatican and the continent.
