Israel Condemns Soldier’s Destruction of Jesus Statue in Southern Lebanon
An incident involving an Israeli soldier in southern Lebanon has sparked outrage after footage showed him smashing a statue of Jesus using a heavy hammer.
The act was widely viewed as a serious insult to Christian beliefs, particularly among local communities who revere Jesus Christ as a central figure of faith. According to Christian doctrine, Jesus came to redeem humanity, was crucified, and later resurrected, as described in the New Testament of the Bible.
In contrast, many followers of Judaism, which is the majority religion in Israel, do not recognize Jesus as the Messiah and instead await a future savior, adhering primarily to the Old Testament.
Responding to the incident, the Israel Defense Forces issued a statement on the night of April 19, 2026, distancing itself from the soldier’s actions. The military emphasized that such behavior does not reflect its values and confirmed that an investigation is underway, with those responsible expected to face disciplinary measures.
Israel’s Foreign Minister, Gideon Sa’ar, also condemned the act, describing it as regrettable and reaffirming the country’s commitment to religious tolerance. He issued an apology to those offended, particularly members of the Christian community.
The IDF clarified that its presence in Lebanon is focused on security operations targeting the armed group Hezbollah, and not on damaging civilian or religious sites. Authorities have also indicated that efforts will be made to restore the destroyed statue.
The incident has renewed attention on the importance of respecting religious symbols, especially in conflict-affected regions where tensions are already high.
