
Basketball: The Tigers' second victory of the season comes against AZOMCO
March 5th, Wednesday Espoir, APR 86-79 Tigers 89-96 AZOMCO Kepler REG 72-71 On Wednesday, March 5 at Petit Stade, the Tigers basketball team defeated AZOMCO 96-89 to record their second victory of the domestic league season. The last victory for Henry Mwinuka's team came on January 24, when they defeated Espoir 80-76 in the Rwanda Basketball League opener.
Since then, the Tigers have been having trouble, but they came back on Wednesday playing better. They got off to a great start and won the first quarter 31–23, but AZOMCO rallied in the second quarter 26–22, cutting the margin to four points.
At the half, the Tigers had a 53-49 edge.
Pitchou Manga, the center, got his team going and they dominated the second half. They took a 22-point lead into the fourth and final quarter after winning the third quarter 29–11.
AZOMCO looked very well-organized defensively and speedy moving forward as they entered the final quarter. It was too late for them to win the game, but their tactical shift helped them win the last quarter 29–14.
Manga contributed 16 rebounds and a game-high 33 points, while Shakir Smith and Pascal Niyonkuru, who scored 18 and 13 points, respectively, were also significant players to Tiger's victory on Wednesday. With 26 points, Damaria Franklin led AZOMCO in scoring.
In the other match on Wednesday, Rwanda Energy Group (REG) avoided Kepler's upset with a thrilling 72-71 victory, while APR continued their winning streak by defeating Espoir 86-79.
