President Kagame Thanks Rwandans for Creating Lasting UCI Legacy
Rwandan President Paul Kagame has expressed gratitude to citizens for their dedication and hospitality during the 2025 UCI Road World Championships, which concluded in Kigali after more than a week of competition.
In a message shared on Sunday, September 28, following Slovenian rider Tadej Pogačar’s gold medal victory in the Men’s Elite Road Race, President Kagame praised the teamwork that made the event a memorable milestone for Rwanda and Africa.
He extended his appreciation to UCI President David Lappartient, his delegation, Rwanda’s security agencies, partners, and the Rwandan people whose commitment ensured a successful and unforgettable championship.
“This championship has been a source of pride for our nation,” Kagame said. “I thank all the cyclists for their endurance, my friend David Lappartient and the UCI team, our security services, partners, and especially the Rwandan people whose spirit and sacrifice turned this event into history.”
It was the first time the prestigious cycling championship was held in Rwanda and on the African continent, attracting riders and fans from around the world. Many international visitors admitted they were impressed by Rwanda’s organizational capacity, comparing it favorably to established cycling nations in Europe.
From September 20–28, Kigali turned into a cycling festival, with residents either lining the streets to cheer or adjusting their daily routines to facilitate the event.
The championship showcased Africa’s potential to host major international competitions, with challenging routes through Kigali’s hilly terrain testing riders’ stamina and skill. UCI estimates indicate that nearly one million spectators followed the races from the roadside.
This 98th edition of the World Championships ended with President Kagame being presented a special award in recognition of his pivotal role in bringing the event to Africa for the first time.
The next UCI Road World Championships will take place in Montréal, Canada, from September 20–27, 2026.
