Rayon Sports failed to overcome a two-goal lead in the contentiously postponed match, which started behind closed doors at Bugesera Stadium on Wednesday, May 21. Hakim Bugingo's late goal proved to be too little, too late.

On Saturday, May 17, Rayon Sports supporters tossed projectiles onto the field in protest of center referee Patrick Ngaboyisonga, whom they said was denying their team a penalty, forcing the game to be called off in the 57th minute.

The referee waved play on after Abeddy Biramahire was hauled down in Bugesera's penalty area, igniting tension seconds earlier.

After Bugesera launched a swift counterattack and Umar Abba converted a penalty kick in the 55th minute, the referee decided to call off the game for security reasons. The irate traveling supporters screamed, "We are fed up, we are fed up."

Prior to the game being canceled, Bugesera had a 2-0 advantage.

The local football regulatory body decided two days after the riots that the game would restart as soon as it had been halted, with the same officials and scoreline, but without any spectators.  The stadium was only open to honorary presidents and club leaders.

Rayon Sports made two lineup changes as the game continued, substituting Prince Elenga Kanga and Emmanuel Nshimiyimana for Adama Bagayogo and Richard Ndayishimiye.

Rayon Sports persisted in trying to rally, but Bugesera remained composed and played strong defense.  When goalkeeper Fils Habineza failed to clear a cross from Innocent Assana, Bugingo scored the goal to give the visitors a one-goal in the 85th minute.

After four extra minutes of regulation time, Rayon Sports was unable to equalize, and Bugesera held firm to win 2-1, moving them up to 10th place with 34 points while Rayon fell to second place with 59 points.

If APR win their next two games, the Blues' chances of winning the championship might be ended.
