President of Senegal Declares Nationwide Holiday After AFCON 2025 Victory
Following Senegal’s historic triumph at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has declared Monday, 19 January 2026, a nationwide paid public holiday.
The announcement came after the Teranga Lions defeated Morocco 1‑0 in the final, securing Senegal’s second continental title.
Addressing the nation, President Faye called on citizens to celebrate responsibly and with pride, highlighting how football continues to unite and inspire the country.
Across Dakar and other major cities, fans welcomed the news with jubilant celebrations, waving flags, lighting fireworks, and dancing in the streets.
Schools, offices, and businesses nationwide will remain closed, allowing all Senegalese to partake in the festivities. Other things of the day underscore the role of sports in bringing communities together and celebrating the country’s culture and achievements.
