President Paul Kagame is expected to travel to Tanzania on May 3, 2026, for a one-day working visit aimed at reinforcing the strong bilateral relations between the two countries.

The visit was officially announced by Bakari S. Machumu, who serves as the Director of Presidential Communications at State House (Ikulu), noting that President Kagame will hold high-level talks with his counterpart, Samia Suluhu Hassan.

According to the statement, discussions between the two leaders will focus on strengthening cooperation across key sectors such as trade, infrastructure, agriculture, technology, and regional security, reflecting the deepening partnership between Rwanda and Tanzania.

The visit follows recent diplomatic engagements, including a visit to Rwanda by Tanzania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Mahamoud Thabit Kombo, in late March 2026, which also aimed at enhancing bilateral collaboration.

Rwanda continues to rely on the Port of Dar es Salaam for a significant share of its imports, with about 70% of goods transiting through the port, underscoring Tanzania’s strategic role in facilitating Rwanda’s access to international markets.

In July 2025, Tanzania also authorized the establishment of Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) offices in Kigali, a move expected to streamline logistics and accelerate trade between the two nations.

As members of the East African Community, Rwanda and Tanzania are also collaborating on major infrastructure projects, including the planned Isaka–Kigali Standard Gauge Railway, which aims to ease the movement of goods and boost regional integration.

President Kagame’s visit underscores the continued commitment by both countries to deepen strategic ties and expand cooperation for mutual economic growth and regional stability.
