President Paul Kagame on April 20, 2026, received a delegation led by HRH Prince Oheneba Yaw Otchere, Royal Ambassador of His Majesty the Asantehene of the Ashanti Kingdom, Ghana, for discussions focused on expanding cooperation.

According to a statement from Village Urugwiro, the talks centered on strengthening collaboration between Rwanda and the Ashanti Kingdom, with particular emphasis on unlocking opportunities in trade, investment, and the minerals sector.

The Ashanti Kingdom is one of the most historically influential traditional states in West Africa, dating back to the 17th century and founded by Osei Tutu. It is located in central Ghana and covers a vast territory, with Kumasi serving as its cultural and administrative capital.

Today, the kingdom is led by Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II, a highly respected traditional leader who plays a key cultural and spiritual role among the Ashanti people, though he does not hold a formal political office within Ghana’s government.

The Ashanti Kingdom’s economy is driven by sectors such as gold mining, agriculture, trade, and tourism areas that align with Rwanda’s development priorities and present opportunities for mutually beneficial partnerships.

This engagement further strengthens Rwanda’s broader relations with Ghana, where both countries already cooperate in areas including aviation, security, private sector development, tourism, culture, finance, and trade.

The meeting signals growing interest in deepening ties not only at the state level but also with influential traditional institutions that play a key role in economic and cultural development.
