MTN Rwanda names a new leader
Ali Monzer has been named the next CEO of MTN Rwanda, replacing Mapula Bodibe, who has been in the role since September 2022.
Mapula, who rotates within the MTN Group, will take up Monzer's role as CEO of MTN South Sudan, which she held before to this appointment.
He is anticipated to start work on April 22.
While he was in charge of MTN South Sudan, Monzer led the company through a period of economic upheaval during which operations stabilized, market share increased, and actual revenue growth was achieved.
Regaining MTN's leadership in Net Promoter Score (NPS) is evidence of the brand's restored trust and market dominance, and the management praised his efforts in promoting the customer-first approach.
"MTN South Sudan's position as the country's telecom leader was solidified by his unwavering focus on operational efficiency, digital innovation, and customer experience." He promoted a culture of excellence and engagement within the company, which led to one of the top employee engagement ratings, according to the statement.
Monzer was Chief Technology and Information Officer of MTN Uganda before becoming CEO of MTN South Sudan. Additionally, he served in a number of high-level positions within the MTN Group, such as General Manager, Solution Delivery for MTN Nigeria.
Monzer's "extensive experience of 21 years in telecoms will certainly bode well for MTN Rwanda," according to MTN Rwanda Chairman Faustin Mbundu.
Monzer joins the telco that has experienced a challenging financial performance in 2024.
MTN's service revenue increased by 4.6% to Rwf257.7 billion in 2024, indicating a slight gain.
But over the same time period, the telco reported a loss after tax of Rwf5.5 billion, which was a 194.1 percent decrease from the profit reported the year before.
Low sales growth and high operating expenditures were blamed for the financial performance. Throughout the 2024 quarterly financial statements, the increase has been sluggish.
