Apple’s newly unveiled Siri AI will have a different approach from rival AI chatbots, with the company designing the assistant to be practical, concise and less conversational than competitors such as ChatGPT and Gemini.

The revamped Siri AI was introduced during Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) this week; it's expected to launch alongside iOS 27 later this year. The updated Siri is expected to be integrated across all iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices, with a focus on helping users complete tasks rather than engaging in long conversations.

Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering, described the company’s vision for the assistant, saying  “We see Siri not as a separate chatbot you go have a conversation with, but rather as an integral, conversational tool that you use in the moment, deeply integrated into your experience.”

The Verge newspaper reported that Apple’s approach contrasts with competitors that are building AI systems capable of extended, human-like conversations, sometimes designed to simulate companionship as much as productivity.

The growing debate about how emotionally engaging AI systems should be has pushed several tech companies to reconsider their design strategies, amid concerns that users may form attachments to conversational AI.

The new Siri represents one of Apple’s most significant updates to its voice assistant in years, as the company works to strengthen its position in an AI industry increasingly dominated by OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft.
