Kenya: Twelve Feared Dead as Light Aircraft Crashes in Kwale County
A light aircraft carrying 12 people crashed shortly after takeoff from Diani in southeastern Kenya, bursting into flames near Shimba Hills in Kwale County. Authorities say investigations are underway to determine the cause of the tragedy, as reports indicate there may be no survivors.
A light aircraft carrying 12 people crashed on Tuesday morning in southeastern Kenya, according to the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA).
The plane, which had departed from Diani a coastal town along the Indian Ocean in Kwale County was headed to Kichwa Tembo in the country’s western region when the accident occurred.
Reports from local media indicate that the aircraft went down in the Shimba area, approximately 20 kilometers from Diani, just minutes after takeoff. Videos circulating on social media show the wreckage engulfed in flames shortly after the crash.
Preliminary reports suggest that all 12 occupants may have perished, although aviation authorities have yet to officially confirm the fatalities. The identities of those on board have not been released.
In a brief statement, the KCAA said investigations are underway to determine the cause of the crash.
