Hungary and Slovakia condemn Russian strikes near Uzhhorod after Fico’s Moscow trip
Russian drone and missile strikes near the western Ukrainian city of Uzhhorod have sparked strong condemnation from both Hungary and Slovakia, after explosions were reported close to their borders.
Slovak officials described the attacks as dangerous and unacceptable, warning that military activity near NATO territory threatens regional stability and civilian safety. Hungarian authorities also criticised the strikes, particularly because the Transcarpathia region is home to a large ethnic Hungarian community.
The reaction comes only days after Robert Fico travelled to Moscow for talks with Vladimir Putin during Russia’s Victory Day events, a move that faced criticism from several European leaders.
Security measures were tightened near the Slovak-Ukrainian border following the attacks, while neighbouring countries monitored the situation closely amid fears the conflict could spill closer to NATO territory.
The strikes formed part of one of Russia’s latest large-scale aerial assaults on Ukraine, with drones and missiles targeting infrastructure and civilian areas across multiple regions.
