Bangladesh is mourning one of its most prominent political figures, Khaleda Zia, the country’s first female prime minister, who passed away at the age of 80 after a prolonged illness.

According to the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Khaleda Zia had been receiving treatment at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka since 23 November 2025. Her health had been severely affected by multiple ailments, including liver disease, heart complications, diabetes, and respiratory issues, which eventually led to her death.

Khaleda Zia served as prime minister twice, from 1991–1996 and 2001–2006, playing a key role in advancing democracy and guiding the nation through challenging times. She was a towering figure in Bangladeshi politics, often in political rivalry with Sheikh Hasina, the current Prime Minister.

She was among the first Muslim women in the world to lead a country, following the path of leaders like Benazir Bhutto of Pakistan, and is remembered for her dedication, resilience, and significant impact on Bangladesh’s political history.

Her passing has left the nation in grief, with mourning periods declared, as citizens and political figures alike honor her life, leadership, and enduring legacy.
