Rwanda Hands Over Stolen Vehicles to South Africa Following Joint Investigation
Rwanda has returned five stolen vehicles to the Republic of South Africa after they were intercepted at various border posts while being smuggled into the country, the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) announced on Saturday.
The handover ceremony took place at RIB Headquarters in Kigali, symbolizing strengthened cooperation between Rwanda and South Africa in combating transnational vehicle theft and trafficking.
According to RIB, the vehicles were recovered at Gatuna, Rusumo, and Bugarama border posts over different periods, following close coordination between RIB and Interpol Rwanda through international data-sharing systems.
RIB was represented by Antoine Ngarambe, Head of Interpol and International Cooperation Unit, while Lt. Col. Brian Butana Mashingo, Head of Vehicle Crime Investigation for South Africa, led the delegation from Pretoria.
Ngarambe highlighted the importance of Interpol’s i247 communication system, which enables real-time data exchange between member countries on wanted persons, stolen items, and other criminal investigations.
“Through this system, we can verify at border points whether individuals or vehicles are flagged by Interpol, and quickly act to prevent the movement of stolen property,” Ngarambe explained.
Since 2016, Interpol Rwanda has intercepted 49 stolen vehicles brought into the country from abroad 41 of which have already been returned to their rightful owners in countries including Tanzania, South Africa, Canada, and Sweden.
Rwanda became a member of Interpol in 1974, and its growing capacity has been recognized across the region, particularly with the integration of advanced data systems that enhance criminal tracking and cross-border collaboration.
During the ceremony, both delegations signed official documents confirming the transfer of the vehicles, with RIB formally handing over the keys to the South African representative.
The move reflects Rwanda’s ongoing commitment to regional cooperation in law enforcement and the fight against organized cross-border crime.
