RDF peacekeepers in South Sudan honored with UN medals
Rwandan peacekeepers serving under the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (United Nations Mission in South Sudan – UNMISS) have been awarded United Nations service medals in recognition of their dedication to protecting civilians and fulfilling their peacekeeping mandate.
The medal ceremony took place on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, at the UNMISS headquarters in Tomping, located in Juba, South Sudan.
The troops, deployed under Rwanda Battalion One (Rwanbatt-1), were commended for their professionalism, discipline, and resilience throughout their mission.
Deputy Force Commander of UNMISS, Maj. Gen. Robert Yaw Affram, who presided over the event, described the medal as a powerful symbol of commitment and sacrifice.
“The United Nations medal you receive today represents professionalism, integrity, dedication, and steadfast commitment to peacekeeping duties,” he said. “It reflects long days in challenging conditions, nights spent on guard, and the courage to uphold your responsibilities even in difficult circumstances. This is a medal earned through service.”
Maj. Gen. Affram also expressed appreciation to the Government of Rwanda and the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) for consistently deploying well-trained and disciplined personnel to UN peacekeeping operations.
Commander of Rwanbatt-1, Lt. Col. Paul Ndushabandi, praised the contingent for their hard work, perseverance, and bravery during the ten months they have served in South Sudan.
He encouraged the troops to maintain the same level of dedication during the remainder of their deployment, noting that the medal ceremony marked another significant milestone in their honorable mission to safeguard human life.
The event featured a military parade and cultural performances highlighting Rwanda’s heritage, organized by members of Rwanbatt-1 to celebrate the achievement.
Rwanda remains one of the leading contributors to UN peacekeeping missions worldwide, with its forces continuing to earn recognition for professionalism and commitment on the international stage.
