President William Ruto swears in 37 new judges in historic judiciary expansion

President William Ruto has today sworn in 37 new judges to the High Court and the Environment and Land Court, marking the largest single intake of judges in the country’s history.


This significant milestone brings the total number of judges appointed over the past three years of his administration to 98, underscoring the government’s commitment to strengthening the capacity and efficiency of the Judiciary.

Speaking during the ceremony, President Ruto emphasized that the move not only fulfills a key pledge to fortify the judicial system, but also reinforces its role as a cornerstone of inclusive development and a guardian of public trust in Kenya’s democratic order.

In his capacity as Chairperson of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), the President also presided over the swearing-in of 12 judges to the COMESA Court of Justice. The newly appointed regional judges are tasked with the critical responsibility of interpreting and upholding the COMESA Treaty.

President Ruto highlighted that such appointments carry immense authority and responsibility, calling on the judges to uphold the highest standards of integrity, accountability, and service to the people.

He extended his congratulations to all the newly appointed judges, urging them to discharge their duties with fairness, independence, and professionalism, while remaining mindful of the trust placed in them by both the nation and the region.
