Mali and Burkina Faso Impose Reciprocal Visa Restrictions on U.S. Nationals
Mali and Burkina Faso have announced reciprocal visa restrictions on United States nationals in response to Washington’s recent decision to tighten entry requirements for citizens of the two West African countries.
In separate official statements released on December 30, both governments said the measures follow a U.S. decision dated December 16, 2025, which reinforced restrictions on entry into the United States for Malian and Burkinabè nationals.
The Malian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said it “took note” of the U.S. decision but expressed regret that such a significant move was taken without prior consultation. The ministry further questioned the security justification cited by U.S. authorities, arguing that it does not reflect current realities on the ground.
Applying the principle of reciprocity, Mali announced that U.S. citizens will now be subject to the same visa conditions and requirements imposed on Malian nationals seeking to enter the United States. The measures take immediate effect.
Despite the decision, Bamako reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining constructive and respectful cooperation with international partners, stressing its openness to relations based on mutual respect and shared interests.
Similarly, the Government of Burkina Faso confirmed that it has introduced equivalent visa measures for U.S. nationals after the country was included among those facing total visa restrictions by the United States.
In its communiqué, Ouagadougou emphasized its attachment to sovereign equality, mutual respect, and reciprocity in international relations. The Burkinabè authorities also reiterated their willingness to engage in cooperation grounded in respect for reciprocal interests with all partners.
Both countries underlined that while they remain open to dialogue and international cooperation, decisions affecting their citizens must be based on fairness, consultation, and respect for state sovereignty.
