Five things to remember from RPL week 19
With the highly anticipated meeting between APR FC and Rayon Sports now deciding who will top the table following the twentieth match day, Week 19 of the 2024–25 Rwanda Premier League left the title race wide open.
Twenty goals were scored around the league centers on the match day last weekend. Rayon Sports struggled against Gasogi United at home, while APR, who had defeated Police FC 3-1 on Sunday, narrowly reduced the distance to within 2 points.
Rayon is having trouble without Ngagne and Muhire.
Robertinho is under increasing pressure as his Blues have been struggling for form since the start of the league season's second round.
Two of Rayon Sports' greatest players are out for six months: attacker Fall Ngagne and captain Kevin Muhire.
Muhire was sorely missed in the tie with Gasogi United, even though he might make a comeback this weekend against APR.
Rayon needed someone who could locate Abedi Biramahire and open up play, but they didn't get it. Rahman Rukundo isn't fitting in at that position, despite coach Robertinho's best efforts.
Once more, Biramahire squandered opportunities because he was slow to react.
Amagaju FC and Mukura are unpredictable.
Mukura Victory Sports, who had defeated APR the weekend before, traveled to Rubavu and lost badly against Marines FC 3-1.
This season, the Huye-based team performs well against powerful teams, but they have had trouble handling weaker opponents. In their three travels to Rubavu this season, they have only scored once and let up nine goals.
However, after limiting Rayon to just two draws all season, Amagaju stayed home and fell to Bugesera 1-0.
When playing the weaker clubs, the two teams need to step up their game and prevent complacency.
APR returning to prime time thanks to Ouattara
APR's attacking unit didn't look up to par at the beginning of the season, but they are slowly improving in the second round.
The club's assault has gained more bite when Djibril Ouattara, a Burkinabe striker, joined; they are now attacking from all sides.
Additionally, it has given Mamadou Sy competition, who has also been improving.
Muhazi United's magical ending with Etincelles
Muhazi United defeated Etincelles 1-0 at Ngoma Syadium on Saturday, ending their four-game winning streak under Innocent Seninga in the second round.
With 22 points, the Rwamagana-based team has won their previous three games and is steadily becoming better, moving up to 12th place in the standings.
Muhazi United and Etincelles are separated by just one point.
As the relegation struggle develops, Kiyovu demonstrates tenacity.
Kiyovu Sports defeated Gorilla FC 3-1 on Saturday after rallying from a goal deficit, demonstrating tenacity and spirit.
Few teams make it past Gorilla FC, but Kiyovu demonstrated that while class endures forever, form is ephemeral.
Kiyovu can avoid relegation if they can play similarly in their remaining games with ten games left in the season.
