Fighting in eastern DRC is intensifying amid accusations that FARDC has supplied ammunition to FDLR and other allied militias battling AFC/M23. The ammunition is reportedly being used in heavy clashes around the Rubarika highlands and in civilian areas such as Katogota and Kamanyola, raising concerns for local residents. Meanwhile, AFC/M23 has taken full control of the strategic locality of Luvungi, located just a short distance from Uvira, further heightening tensions across the region.

The Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) are facing new accusations of supplying large quantities of ammunition to the FDLR and other armed groups fighting alongside them against the AFC/M23 in the Rusizi Valley of South Kivu, particularly within Uvira territory.

Reliable reports indicate that these weapons and ammunition were delivered to FDLR fighters to support ongoing clashes, where FARDC forces together with Burundian troops, FDLR combatants and Wazalendo militias engaged in heavy battles with AFC/M23 on the Rubarika highlands near Uvira city.

Intense fighting on Tuesday and Wednesday heavily affected civilian areas such as Katogota and Kamanyola. Shells fired by FARDC reportedly landed in these populated zones, raising serious concerns about the safety of residents living across the Rusizi Valley.

As the conflict escalated, AFC/M23 on Wednesday morning captured the entirety of Luvungi, a strategic locality they had partially seized the previous day. Luvungi holds major tactical importance and lies only a short distance from Uvira, one of South Kivu’s most significant urban centers.

The growing hostilities have deepened fears in the region as thousands of civilians flee their homes. Neighboring countries particularly Burundi and Rwanda are closely monitoring the situation as instability in the Great Lakes region risks further escalation.
