Rwandan peacekeepers in South Sudan awarded prestigious UN Service Medals
Rwandan peacekeepers serving under the United Nations Mission in South Sudan were today awarded prestigious United Nations service medals during a colourful ceremony held at the UN Base Camp in Malakal, Upper Nile State, in recognition of their professionalism, dedication, and contribution to peacekeeping efforts.
The decorated contingent, serving as RWANBATT-2, was praised for its outstanding role in advancing peace and protecting civilians in one of South Sudan’s most volatile regions.
The ceremony was presided over by UNMISS Force Commander Maj Gen Junhui Wu, who commended the Rwandan contingent for its discipline, resilience, and unwavering commitment to international peace and security.
“The medals you receive today symbolize the trust of the United Nations and the international community. They reflect your courage, your resilience and your professionalism in a complex and demanding operational environment,” Maj Gen Wu said.
He noted that since deployment, the Rwandan peacekeepers have maintained high standards of operational readiness and teamwork while protecting civilians and supporting humanitarian access in their area of responsibility.
Rwanda’s Senior National Representative in South Sudan, Col Emmanuel Kanobayire, said the contingent carried out its mission with determination despite operational challenges.
He emphasized that the medals awarded to the peacekeepers represent sacrifice, courage, commitment, and devotion to the principles of international peacekeeping beyond simply marking the completion of service.
The ceremony was attended by senior UNMISS officials, military officers, and representatives from different peacekeeping contingents operating in Upper Nile State.
