Rwanda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Amb. Olivier Nduhungirehe, is among officials attending the 48th Ordinary Session of the African Union (AU) Executive Council, which precedes the 39th Assembly of Heads of State and Government scheduled for February 14–15, 2026.

The two-day meeting opened on Wednesday, February 11, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, under the theme: “Sustainable Management of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene for the Achievement of Agenda 2063.”

In his opening remarks, AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf emphasized that water is a vital shared resource that must be protected and used responsibly, especially in the context of climate change.

He stressed that proper water governance can serve as a foundation for peace and cooperation among African nations.

He stated, “In times of climate change, the responsible use of water in everyday life is essential. This shared resource must be safeguarded and treated as a common good that connects our countries and promotes peace.”

The AU Executive Council is one of the organization’s key organs, composed of Ministers of Foreign Affairs or other designated representatives from member states. Its role includes coordinating and preparing policy decisions on matters of common interest to member countries.

The 48th session is taking place at the AU Headquarters in Addis Ababa and has brought together foreign ministers and delegates from across the continent.
