Rwanda and Kenya Sign New Agreement to Boost Trade Cooperation
On January 22, 2026, Rwanda’s Ministry of Infrastructure and the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at strengthening trade and transport cooperation between the two countries.
The agreement provides for the establishment of a Kenya Ports Authority representative office in Kigali, a move expected to improve coordination and efficiency in cargo handling and logistics services for Rwandan traders using the Port of Mombasa.
Officials described the initiative as a significant milestone in deepening bilateral relations between Rwanda and Kenya, particularly in facilitating trade along the Northern Corridor, which serves as a key transport route for goods in the region.
Through this partnership, the new KPA office in Kigali will play a central role in streamlining cargo movement, enhancing communication between traders and relevant authorities, and reducing delays in the transportation process. This is also expected to lower logistics costs and improve access to port services for businesses operating in Rwanda.
Stakeholders involved in the agreement expressed confidence that the initiative will not only benefit traders but also enhance regional trade capacity and competitiveness among countries linked to the Northern Corridor.
The agreement aligns with ongoing efforts by Rwanda and Kenya to promote cooperation in transport, trade, and regional development, with the broader objective of facilitating the free movement of goods and supporting economic integration within the East African region.
