Kirehe Tops 2024/2025 Primary School National Exams with 97% Pass Rate
The Ministry of Education (MINEDUC) and the National Examination and School Inspection Authority (NESA) have officially released the results of the 2024/2025 national examinations for primary and lower secondary schools.
According to the results, Kirehe District emerged as the best-performing district nationwide, recording an impressive 97.09% pass rate in primary school examinations. It was followed by Kicukiro (92.28%) and Ngoma (90.93%).
On the other end, Nyaruguru District registered the lowest performance with a pass rate of 64.57%, followed by Ruhango (66.68%) and Nyabihu (68.99%).
Girls Outperform Boys
The results also revealed that girls performed better than boys in primary exams, with 53% of successful candidates being girls, compared to 46.8% boys. Overall, the national pass rate stood at 75.64%.
Minister of Education Joseph Nsengimana, who officiated the release of the results on August 19, 2025, commended the students while emphasizing the importance of quality education.
“We must continue raising education standards. Students, teachers, and parents all have a role to play in ensuring children learn. We will not pretend that they have learned when they haven’t, but we shall leave no effort behind to help them succeed,” Nsengimana said.
Performance varied across subjects. Kinyarwanda had the highest success rate at 98%, while Mathematics proved the most challenging, with only 27% of candidates passing. Other subjects recorded moderate results: English (72%), Science & ICT (71%), and General Knowledge & Religious Studies (75%).
Regional Outlook
At the provincial level, the Eastern Province led with an 82% pass rate, followed by Kigali City (77%).
Private schools continued to dominate with a 99% pass rate, while government schools recorded 75%, and government-aided schools 72%.
The Director General of NESA, Dr. Bahati Bernard, noted that these results highlight both progress and challenges that need continued efforts, especially in Mathematics.
