Kigali hosted the “Behind The Game” event, an initiative organized by Champs 4 Change aimed at helping young people understand how sports can be transformed into a career path and a source of economic opportunity beyond competition.

The event brought together key stakeholders in Rwanda’s sports sector, including the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sports, Candy Basomingera, alongside sports leaders, athletes, and youth interested in opportunities within the industry.

Speaking during the event, Clarisse highlighted Rwanda’s growing reputation as one of Africa’s leading destinations for hosting international sporting events.

“Rwanda has positioned itself as a model for hosting major sporting events. This success creates opportunities not only for athletes but also for young people interested in careers in event management, hospitality, media, and other sectors connected to sports,” she said.

Permanent Secretary Candy Basomingera emphasized that sports should be viewed as an industry with significant economic and professional potential rather than simply entertainment.

“Young people should see sports as a profession and an industry with enormous potential,” Basomingera said.

Participants discussed various topics including pathways to becoming professional athletes, challenges facing youth in sports, investment opportunities in the sector, and strategies for maximizing the economic benefits linked to sports.

Rwanda Boxing Federation President Bashir Ntwari also shared insights on the importance of discipline, dedication, and long-term planning for young athletes seeking sustainable careers in sports.

The “Behind The Game” initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to empower youth by showcasing the many opportunities available beyond competition and encouraging them to use sports as a platform for personal and professional growth.
