What you need to know about Ray G’s Checkmate, an EP crafted by Rwandans in all aspects
On June 28, 2025, Ugandan artist Reagan Muhairwe, popularly known in music as Ray G, released a mini album (EP) titled Checkmate, made up of six songs that were shaped by Rwandans in various fields.
This artist from Uganda, who is especially popular in the western part of the country where he hails from, rose to fame through songs such as Make A Way, Owangye, Omusheshe featuring Spice Diana, among others.
Ray G’s Checkmate EP consists of six songs: Enyena 100, Ow’eishe, Hama featuring Bruce Melodie, Kunu, Omwerere, and Every Day featuring Elijah Kitaka. All six songs were worked on by Rwandans, from singers, music producers, to video directors.
Bob Pro, a renowned Rwandan producer and sound engineer, worked on four songs on this EP: Enyena 100, Ow’eishe which strongly carries a Rwandan rhythm, Kunu, and Omwerere. Prince Kiiiz, who has also made a name as both a music producer and singer, produced Hama, the collaboration between Ray G and Bruce Melodie.

Besides the Rwandan producers, there were also Ugandan producers involved in this EP. Producer Instramento worked on Ow’eishe, which has been widely appreciated, and also on Every Day. Another contributor was Producer Bruno, who worked on Kunu.
Two songs from the EP have so far been shot into music videos, both handled by Rwandans. The first was Hama, directed by Fayzo Pro, and the second is Ow’eishe, directed by Gad, one of Rwanda’s most sought-after video directors.
