Trump asks Liberian president where he learnt English, his country’s official language
Former U.S. President Donald Trump has sparked online debate after asking Liberian President Joseph Boakai where he learnt to speak English despite English being Liberia’s official language.
The exchange happened on Wednesday, 9 July 2025 during a reception at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida, where he was meeting several African leaders to discuss trade and investment opportunities. According to footage widely shared by U.S. media, Trump praised Boakai’s fluency, saying: “Such good English… Where did you learn to speak so beautifully?”
President Boakai reportedly chuckled before responding that he learnt English in Liberia, which has used English as its official language since its founding in the 19th century by freed African Americans.
Trump then added: “I have people at this table who can’t speak nearly as well.” The remark drew mixed reactions, with some describing it as an awkward moment that revealed Trump’s lack of awareness about Liberia’s history, while others dismissed it as harmless small talk.
Liberia, Africa’s oldest republic, was founded in 1822 by freed Black people from the United States. English has remained its official language, although over 20 indigenous languages are also spoken across the country.
The meeting, which brought together leaders from several West African nations, focused on strengthening economic ties and exploring new trade deals. Despite the light moment, both sides said the discussions were productive.
Neither Trump’s office nor President Boakai’s team has issued an official comment on the viral clip.
