Rwandan Troops Join UNMISS Forces in Welcoming New Mission Head Anita Kiki Gbeho
Rwandan peacekeepers serving under the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), alongside troops from Bangladesh, China, Ethiopia, and Nepal, joined in officially welcoming the mission’s newly appointed head, Anita Kiki Gbeho.
The reception ceremony took place at the UNMISS headquarters near Juba on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, and was marked by a formal military parade in her honor. The event symbolized a new phase in the mission’s leadership as peacekeepers reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining stability in South Sudan.
Gbeho was recently appointed by the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, to serve as the Special Representative and head of UNMISS. In this role, she will oversee the mission’s efforts to support peace and security, while also assisting South Sudan’s government and citizens in advancing long-term stability and development.
She takes over the position following the passing of her predecessor, Nicholas Haysom, who died on March 18, 2026.
UNMISS plays a critical role in protecting civilians, facilitating humanitarian assistance, and supporting peace processes in South Sudan, a country that has faced years of conflict and instability.
Gbeho’s leadership is expected to guide the mission through ongoing challenges while strengthening cooperation between international partners and local institutions.
The welcoming ceremony highlighted the unity among peacekeeping forces from different nations and their shared goal of fostering peace in South Sudan. It also underscored Rwanda’s continued contribution to international peacekeeping efforts, particularly in the region.
As she assumes office, expectations are high that Gbeho will build on previous efforts and help steer the mission toward achieving lasting peace and security in South Sudan.
