The Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) has signed a cooperation agreement with its Mauritanian counterpart, the Mauritanian Football Federation (FFRIM), aimed at strengthening football governance and promoting the development of the sport in both countries.

The agreement was officially signed on Thursday, January 22, 2026, by FFRIM President Ahmed Yahya and FERWAFA President Shema Ngoga Fabrice, following a three-day official visit by FERWAFA officials to Mauritania that began on January 20.

Under this partnership, the two federations will collaborate in several key areas, including improving football governance structures, enhancing financial management and auditing systems, and building technical capacity through training programs for coaches.

The agreement also places strong emphasis on youth development, football academies, sports infrastructure, and referee training particularly in the use of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology. In addition, the two sides plan to organize friendly matches, with special focus on promoting women’s football.

Mauritania has emerged as one of Africa’s steadily improving football nations in recent years, especially under the leadership of Ahmed Yahya. Since 2019, the country has qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations three times and, in the 2023 edition, advanced beyond the group stage to reach the Round of 16.
