President Kagame urges Rwandans not to fear history but to focus on development
President Paul Kagame has urged Rwandans to stop being held back by historical grievances and instead remain focused on self-reliance and sustainable development, warning against excuses that hinder progress.
Speaking on February 6, 2026, as he closed the 20th National Umushyikirano Council, President Kagame said Rwandans have the capacity to solve their own problems but often fail to act on the commitments they make during such forums.
He cautioned against allowing history to become a permanent justification for inaction, stressing that Rwandans should continue their development journey without being intimidated by foreign actors who seek to keep them dependent and poor.
The President noted that both Rwandans and Africans more broadly possess the ability to achieve progress but often struggle due to a failure to do what is necessary, despite having the required knowledge and resources.
“Politics is a culture. When you have capacity, knowledge, and all the necessary tools, yet nothing tangible comes out of it, then there is a problem,” he said.
Referring to Africa’s past, President Kagame acknowledged the historical role of colonial powers but criticized the tendency of Africans to continually blame external actors for the continent’s setbacks. He said such actors often undermine Africa’s progress through various tactics, sometimes offering limited assistance that keeps countries stagnant.
“They constantly undermine you. When you try to move forward, they use different tricks to push you back. Sometimes they show sympathy and lift you slightly, but not enough for you to truly progress. That is Africa’s situation but why accept it?” he questioned.
President Kagame emphasized that Africans should refuse to live under constant interference and instead establish their own systems and strategies to achieve their goals, even when external obstacles persist.
He added that since Rwandans understand their challenges, their root causes, and the solutions, they should not allow themselves to be delayed or intimidated by those who attempt to block their progress.
“We have the capacity. We understand everything where the problems come from and how to solve them. So why hesitate? The real question is: why do you allow yourself to hesitate?” he said.
The Head of State clarified that Rwandans are not expected to solve the world’s problems, but they are fully capable of solving their own. He urged them to remain firm, protect their interests, and resist efforts aimed at reversing their gains.
President Kagame concluded by stressing that staying focused on national goals and refusing to be trapped by the legacy of slavery and colonialism is key to achieving lasting development. He reminded citizens that they have the strength to confront their challenges, build effective systems, and secure a dignified, independent, and secure future for themselves and their country.
