“Rwanda is a trusted and respected partner on the global stage” Minister Nduhungirehe
Rwanda continues to consolidate its position as a reliable, stable, and respected partner internationally, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ambassador Olivier Nduhungirehe, has said.
Speaking on Friday, February 6, 2026, during the second day of the 20th National Umushyikirano Council at the Kigali Convention Centre, Minister Nduhungirehe outlined Rwanda’s growing diplomatic footprint, economic diplomacy efforts, and contribution to global peace and security.
The minister highlighted Rwanda’s expanding diplomatic network since the first Umushyikirano in 2003.
“When the first Umushyikirano was held, Rwanda had only 20 embassies worldwide. Today, we have reached 50 embassies across all continents,” he said.
He added that Rwanda’s openness has been reciprocated by the international community.
“At that time, there were just 16 foreign embassies in Rwanda. Today, they have increased to 47, while 22 international organizations have chosen Rwanda as their headquarters.”
Minister Nduhungirehe emphasized Rwanda’s strong engagement in multilateral institutions, particularly the Commonwealth and La Francophonie.
“Rwanda plays an active role in the Commonwealth and within La Francophonie, which is currently led by a Rwandan, Louise Mushikiwabo. As she prepares to seek another term, this is a moment for all of us to rally behind her,” he noted.
He underscored that Rwanda’s foreign policy places strong emphasis on economic diplomacy, aimed at attracting investment and supporting Rwandan businesses abroad.
“Our ministry works to facilitate investors and help Rwandan traders access international markets. This includes signing investment protection agreements and treaties to avoid double taxation,” he explained.
The minister praised the growing contribution of the Rwandan diaspora to national development, particularly through remittances and investment.
“During the first Umushyikirano, diaspora remittances stood at just 9.6 million US dollars. Today, they have reached 502 million dollars an increase of more than 52 times,” he said.
He also pointed to diaspora-led investments and initiatives supporting government programs such as Cana Challenge and Dusangire Lunch, as well as contributions to education and skills transfer.
On security, Minister Nduhungirehe reaffirmed Rwanda’s commitment to international peacekeeping under the United Nations.
“Rwanda is currently the second-largest contributor of troops to UN peacekeeping missions worldwide, with over 6,000 personnel deployed,” he said.
He cited deployments in countries such as South Sudan and the Central African Republic, noting that Rwanda’s role reflects its dedication to protecting civilians.
“This commitment has also led to bilateral security cooperation with countries like Mozambique and the Central African Republic, where Rwanda is helping restore stability,” he added.
