Mozambican Parliament Speaker Commends Rwanda Security Forces for Role in Restoring Peace in Cabo Delgado
On Tuesday, December 23, 2025, the Speaker of the Parliament of the Republic of Mozambique, Her Excellency Margarida Adamugi Talapa, visited the Rwanda Security Forces (RSF) deployed on a peace and security mission in Mocímboa da Praia, Cabo Delgado Province.
She was accompanied by a high-level delegation that included the Governor of Cabo Delgado Province, Valige Tauabo, and the Chief of Defence Forces of Mozambique (FADM), Major General André Rafael Mahunguane.
The delegation was received by the Rwanda Security Forces Joint Task Force Commander in Mozambique, Major General Vincent Gatama, who briefed them on the overall security situation in areas under RSF responsibility and highlighted the progress made in combating terrorism.
Speaker Talapa praised the commitment and professionalism demonstrated by the Rwanda Security Forces, working alongside Mozambican forces, in countering terrorist activities that had severely destabilized Cabo Delgado Province. She emphasized that peace and security are fundamental pillars for sustainable development in Mozambique and encouraged the Rwandan forces to continue fulfilling their mission with dedication.
She also commended the strong cooperation between Rwanda and Mozambique, noting that this partnership reflects a shared determination to restore lasting peace in Cabo Delgado and to further strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries. According to her, the collaboration stands as a symbol of unity and mutual trust.
Since July 2021, the Rwanda Security Forces have been working jointly with Mozambican security forces to combat the terrorist group Ansar al-Sunnah, which had established strongholds across various districts of Cabo Delgado. The joint operations successfully expelled the militants from their bases, forcing them to flee into forests where they continued to be pursued and neutralized.
Following the restoration of security, displaced residents have returned to their homes and resumed economic and social activities, highlighting the crucial role of security in development and community resilience.
In a move to further strengthen cooperation, the Governments of Rwanda and Mozambique renewed their bilateral agreements in August 2025, focusing on investment and counter-terrorism efforts aimed at reinforcing security and promoting sustainable development.
The visit by the Speaker of Mozambique’s Parliament underscores the country’s appreciation of Rwanda’s contribution to peace and stability in Cabo Delgado, and reaffirms the shared commitment of both nations to continued cooperation in the pursuit of regional security and development.
