President Kagame Receives Uhuru Kenyatta at Village Urugwiro
This evening at Village Urugwiro, President Kagame received former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, who serves as one of the facilitators of the EAC-SADC peace talks aimed at restoring peace in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Their discussion focused on ongoing efforts to establish lasting peace in eastern DRC and to address the root causes of the ongoing conflict.
According to a post on X by the Office of the President of Rwanda (Village Urugwiro), Uhuru Kenyatta arrived in Kigali on July 11, 2025, as part of a visit related to unresolved issues in the DRC, where Rwanda has been accused of supporting the AFC/M23 rebel group—an allegation Rwanda denies. Rwanda, in turn, accuses the DRC of supporting the FDLR, a terrorist group that played a role in the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda.
Kenyatta’s visit comes at a time when Rwanda’s Minister of Security and the DRC’s Minister of Interior are in Doha, Qatar, to follow up on talks between the M23 rebel group and the Congolese government, where they are attending as invited observers, according to France’s international broadcaster RFI.
Earlier this year, in January, Uhuru Kenyatta stated that the Nairobi talks could have continued to yield positive results if the DRC government had not taken actions that hindered the process.
