President Trump signs executive order committing US to defend Qatar after Israeli strikes
President Donald Trump has signed an executive order pledging that the United States will guarantee Qatar’s security and territorial integrity, following Israel’s unprecedented air strikes in Doha last month that drew regional and global condemnation.
The order states that any armed attack on Qatar’s territory, sovereignty, or critical infrastructure will be considered a threat to the peace and security of the United States.
The strikes, carried out on September 9, targeted Hamas officials in Doha who were involved in US-mediated ceasefire talks for Gaza. Several members of the Palestinian team and a Qatari security officer were killed.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued an apology to Qatar, delivered jointly with Trump during a call at the White House. Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani received the call on Monday.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited Qatar on September 16, reaffirming the enduring US-Qatar security partnership and commitment to a safer, more stable region.
Trump described Qatar as a steadfast ally in pursuit of peace, stability, and prosperity, praising its support in mediating regional and global conflicts. Analysts note that while the order signals strong US commitment, any military action ultimately depends on the president and legally binding treaties typically require Senate approval.
The executive order reflects Washington’s attempt to balance its unwavering support for Israel with efforts to preserve its strategic partnership with Qatar.
