President Kagame Holds Talks with Denis Sassou Nguesso in Brazzaville Ahead of Inauguration
President Paul Kagame met with his counterpart Denis Sassou Nguesso in Brazzaville, where the two leaders discussed ways to further strengthen the longstanding ties between their countries.
President Kagame arrived in the Republic of the Congo on April 15, 2026, to attend President Sassou Nguesso’s inauguration scheduled for April 16. The meeting between the two heads of state took place at the presidential residence, Le Palais du Peuple, shortly after Kagame’s arrival.
According to a statement from Village Urugwiro, the leaders exchanged views on the strong bilateral relations between Rwanda and the Republic of the Congo, key regional challenges, and opportunities to deepen cooperation in strategic sectors.
President Kagame also extended his congratulations and best wishes to President Sassou Nguesso as he begins a new term in office.
The inauguration ceremony, set to take place at Unity Stadium in Brazzaville, is expected to draw several African heads of state and other dignitaries.
Sassou Nguesso secured re-election following the March 15 presidential election, where he won a decisive majority, earning another five-year mandate.
Rwanda and the Republic of the Congo share a long-standing partnership rooted in cooperation across multiple sectors, including trade, security, agriculture, land management, and air transport. Rwanda opened its embassy in Brazzaville in 2016, further strengthening diplomatic ties.
The continued high-level engagements between the two leaders highlight a shared commitment to deepening bilateral relations and promoting regional stability and economic growth.
