President Paul Kagame has expressed deep appreciation for NBA star Kawhi Leonard, who is currently in Rwanda mentoring young basketball players through the Giants of Africa initiative.

During a visit to Club Rafiki on Sunday, President Kagame joined Kawhi Leonard and Masai Ujiri the founder of Giants of Africa as they interacted with Rwandan youth undergoing basketball training. The President praised Leonard for dedicating his time to inspire and coach the young players.

"Let me start by thanking Kawhi for taking the time to be here, connecting with our youth and helping them grow their talents. It means a lot to them, and to us as well, as we continue to invest in our young people and support them in discovering and pursuing their passions especially through sports like basketball," President Kagame said.

Kawhi Leonard, who currently plays for the Los Angeles Clippers, arrived in Rwanda on August 1, 2025, as part of the ongoing Giants of Africa summer programs. A two-time NBA champion, Leonard won titles in 2014 with the San Antonio Spurs and in 2019 with the Toronto Raptors under the leadership of Masai Ujiri.

His visit is part of a broader campaign aimed at empowering African youth through sports, especially basketball, by providing access to training, mentorship, and facilities.

President Kagame’s remarks underscored Rwanda’s commitment to youth development through sports, aligning with national efforts to nurture talent and promote healthy lifestyles. The presence of global icons like Leonard and Ujiri is seen as both motivational and strategic in amplifying Rwanda's investment in its young generation.
