Jean Maurice Uwera appointed Deputy Government Spokesperson
The Government of Rwanda has appointed journalist Jean Maurice Uwera as the new Deputy Government Spokesperson, according to resolutions adopted during the Cabinet meeting held on Wednesday, January 28, 2026.
Uwera replaces Alain Mukuralinda, who passed away in April 2025 at the age of 55 due to cardiac arrest. Mukuralinda had served as Deputy Government Spokesperson since 2021.
Before his appointment, Uwera was a journalist at SK FM, a position he assumed after leaving Rwanda Television (RTV). His appointment comes after more than 14 years of experience in journalism and communication, during which he developed a strong understanding of Rwanda’s media landscape, public information needs, and government operations.
Uwera began his journalism career in 2011, working as a news reporter at Flash FM and later in television. Prior to joining the media industry, he also worked in the hospitality and customer service sector, experience that further shaped his communication skills.
He holds a Master’s degree from the Catholic University of Kabgayi. The government expressed confidence that his professional background and media expertise will contribute positively to strengthening public communication and government engagement with citizens.
