Prime Minister Dr. Justin Nsengiyumva outlines key steps to boost Rwanda’s agriculture sector
To advance agriculture, the Rwandan government plans to increase fertilizer use, reduce post-harvest losses, and raise agricultural loans over the next five years.
Prime Minister Dr. Justin Nsengiyumva, while presenting the Government’s 2024–2029 program to both chambers of Parliament, announced that fertilizer use in agriculture will increase from 70 kg per hectare in 2023/24 to 95 kg per hectare by 2029, based on soil nutrient requirements.
He also highlighted measures to reduce post-harvest losses from 13.8% in 2023/24 to 5% by 2029.
Dr. Nsengiyumva emphasized the government’s commitment to investing in modern agriculture, including increasing fertilizer application tailored to soil needs and boosting agricultural loans from 6% of total national loans in 2023 to 10% by 2029.
He explained that reducing post-harvest losses will increase the volume of marketable produce, thereby improving farmers’ incomes and livelihoods.
“We will continue to promote modern agriculture that supports improved livelihoods through increased fertilizer use, reduced post-harvest losses, and expanded access to loans,” said Prime Minister Dr. Nsengiyumva.
Numbers:
- Fertilizer use increase: from 70 kg/hectare (2023/24) to 95 kg/hectare (2029)
