Ghana: Two Ministers Die in Military Helicopter Crash
Ghana’s Minister of Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, and the Minister of Environment, Science and Technology, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, have died in a military helicopter crash that also claimed the lives of six other individuals, including crew members, according to a statement from the government spokesperson.
The tragic accident occurred on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, in the Ashanti Region. Authorities confirmed that there were no survivors.
Earlier that morning, Ghana’s military had announced that the Z9 helicopter, which was carrying the ministers and three crew members, had disappeared from radar.
The aircraft had taken off from the capital city, Accra, at 9 a.m., en route to the mining town of Obuasi, where the officials were heading to attend a national celebration, according to the BBC.
Following the crash, Ghana’s Chief of Defence Staff, Julius Debrah, ordered all national flags to be flown at half-mast in mourning for the victims. So far, the cause of the crash has not been revealed, though investigations are underway.
