On the sidelines of the signing of the Washington Accord for Peace and Prosperity in Washington, D.C., President Paul Kagame delivered a powerful message of hope, responsibility, and determination as Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo took a historic step toward ending a conflict that has lasted three decades.

President Kagame underscored the significance of the moment, highlighting the unique approach that unlocked progress:

“This conflict has lasted for thirty years. We have seen countless mediation efforts, but none succeeded in resolving the underlying issues. President Trump introduced a new and effective dynamism that created the space for breakthroughs. His approach is even-handed, never taking sides. More importantly, President Trump’s approach is pragmatic. The process has not become an end in itself.”

He reaffirmed Rwanda’s unwavering commitment to peace:

“It is up to us, in Africa, working with our partners, to consolidate and expand this peace. There will be ups and downs on the road ahead, there is no doubt about it. Rwanda will not be found wanting. I assure you of that. Our only objective is, and has always been, for our country to be safe and secure, after having endured so much tragedy. We now only want to look forward, in confident expectation of a prosperous and stable future.”

President Kagame emphasized that the success of the accord rests with the parties involved:

“These accords provide everything needed to end this conflict once and for all. If this agreement falters and things do not work out as they are supposed to, the responsibility will not lie with President Trump, but with ourselves.”

Earlier, President Kagame held a bilateral meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump and senior officials at the White House, ahead of the signing ceremony.

Several regional leaders also joined the event. On the sidelines of the accord’s signing, President Kagame met with H.E. William Samoei Ruto, President of Kenya and Chair of the East African Community, who attended the ceremony in solidarity with regional peace efforts.

President Kagame also met with H.E. Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, President of the Council of Ministers of Togo, who participated as an observer. Their discussions focused on strengthening cooperation between Rwanda and Togo in sectors of mutual interest.

Additionally, President Kagame held talks with Barbados Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley, with discussions centered on strengthening bilateral cooperation in security, health, and trade reflecting Rwanda’s expanding international partnerships.

The Washington Accord for Peace and Prosperity, signed by President Kagame and President Félix Tshisekedi in the presence of President Trump, aims to bring lasting stability to Eastern DRC and usher in a new era of regional security and prosperity.

This landmark moment signals renewed hope and commitment from both nations and a shared vision for a peaceful, secure, and thriving future for the people of Rwanda and the DRC.
