Rwanda’s Liberation History to Be Placed in Africa’s Liberation Museum in Harare
The announcement was made on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, during a visit by a five-member Zimbabwean delegation led by Pritchard Zhou. The delegation has been in Rwanda since August 18, 2025, on a working mission to explore ways of strengthening cultural and historical cooperation between the two nations.
As a result of the discussions, both sides agreed to establish a formal cooperation framework soon between Rwanda’s Cultural Heritage Academy and Zimbabwe’s Museum of African Liberation. While no specific date has been announced for signing the agreement, officials said it will take place in the near future.
The Cultural Heritage Academy stated: “Rwanda has been given the opportunity to place the history of its Liberation Struggle in the Museum of African Liberation being built in Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe.”
During their stay, the Zimbabwean delegation visited the Kigali Genocide Memorial in Gisozi and the Campaign Against Genocide Museum, where they were given detailed presentations on Rwanda’s history.
Rwanda and Zimbabwe enjoy strong bilateral relations rooted in shared experiences of liberation struggles, comparable economic development, and close cultural ties. Both countries established embassies in Kigali and Harare in 2019 to further expand cooperation across multiple sectors.
Placing Rwanda’s liberation history in the Harare-based museum is seen as a milestone in preserving Africa’s collective memory of freedom struggles and strengthening cultural ties between the two countries.
